EDUC 1010 - Paraprofessional Theory & Practice Credit Hours: 4.00 Prerequisites: None
This course and practicum is intended for students seeking to meet the standards of the No Child Left Behind Legislation and to introduce the student to the role and responsibilities of the paraprofessional in the K-12 setting. It may be used as a “first step” in a career ladder toward obtaining a paraprofessional certificate or teaching certification. Topics covered include human growth and development, learning principles, instructional strategies for reading, math, and writing, behavior management, professionalism and strategies for working with special needs students. The Practicum component (*24 hours of field work with a K-12 teacher) complements the classroom material while providing the student the opportunity to directly apply classroom theory in a K-12 educational environment. *Student responsible for acquiring fieldwork site. *Before attending a school to complete the Practicum, it is necessary to have a Family Independent Agency (FIA) background check and a criminal background check. The college instructor will provide appropriate forms.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Outcome 1: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses as future classroom teachers.

- Explain the characteristics of effective teachers.
- Identify the Michigan Department of Education Core Teaching Practices.
- Identify effective teaching practices observed in their field experience.
- Reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses in relationship to the characteristics of effective teachers.
Outcome 2: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to demonstrate the organization and planning needed to develop a lesson plan.

- Explain appropriate forms and uses of summative and formative assessment tools
- Develop a quality lesson plan using backward design.
- Use Common Core State Standards when planning lessons.
- Describe ways to incorporate technology into content knowledge.
- Summarize the Science of Learning.
- Incorporate the “Instructional Cycle” into learning activities.
Outcome 3: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of a variety of philosophies of education, major laws, school governance and finance structures that affect schools and teachers.
Objectives: Students will
- Explain the purpose and components of a philosophy of education.
- Compare and contrast a variety of philosophies of education.
- Relate common Theories of Development to student learning.
- Write a personal philosophy of education.
- Explain the major laws that affect teaching.
- Outline the responsibilities and procedures for mandated reporting.
- Describe the teacher’s role in developing an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 Plan.
- Summarize The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
- Describe school governing structures.
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of other building and district professionals in the PK-12 school system.
- Attend a school board meeting.
- Analyze a school board meeting.
Outcome 4: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of current global and societal issues that affect education.
Objectives: Students will
- Research current issues in education.
- Create a group presentation on a current global and societal issue that affects education.
- Discuss current issues in education with peers.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to identify the best practices of effective teachers, teaching and learning styles, and the learning needs of a diverse population.

- Explain classroom management strategies to support individual and group motivation and behavior.
- Develop a plan for creating positive and supportive relationships with and between children.
- Explain a variety of strategies to support English learners in classrooms.
- Discuss opportunities to engage parents, families, and communities in learning environments.
- Outline the Response to Intervention and Universal Design for Learning Frameworks.
Outcome 6: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to explain their level of interest and commitment to becoming a teacher.

- Outline the personal steps required to obtain a Michigan Teaching Certificate.
- Summarize the 5 principles of the Michigan Code of Educational Ethics.
Outcome 7: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to recognize appropriate professional behavior during the field experience.

- Follow school rules.
- Present a professional demeanor in their field experience.
Outcome 8: Upon completion of EDUC-2010, students will be able to observe the role and responsibilities of the teacher within the school.

- Observe and describe the teacher’s daily routine.
- Observe and describe the teacher’s interactions.
