ATBC 1220 - Applied Building Construction Exterior Finishes

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: None

This course provides an overview and basic concepts of the types of materials used for exterior finishes common in today’s residential and commercial buildings. Proper application and installation practices of exterior finishes will be demonstrated and practiced in this course. The content of this course will be delivered in both group discussion and hands-on lab activities.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Students will be able to apply safety protocols when working on a job site.

Objectives: 

  1. Articulate the importance of workplace safety.
  2. Describe general safety rules.
  3. Use appropriate personal protective gear (PPE) when preforming a task.
  4. Identify risk potential on a work site.
  5. Understand the need for fall protection.
  6. Understanding OSHA’s role in relation to the employer and employee responsibility on the jobsite.

Outcome 2: Students will be able to correctly use basic tools common to exterior finishes. 

Objectives: 

  1. Select the proper tools for a given application.
  2. Have basic knowledge of how to properly use the tool for a task.
  3. Understand cleanup and maintenance procedures for tools used.
  4. Demonstrate proper storage and handling of tools used.

Outcome 3: Students will be able to demonstrate proper building practices used in interior finishing.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the correct sequence of the project for the jobsite
  2. Select proper materials for the project
  3. Identify correct debris containment and disposal practices
  4. Identify proper installation procedures for materials and products

Outcome 4: Students will be able to apply the local code and determine the jurisdiction having authority over the site.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the need for the state and local code requirements.
  2. Determine the local code and jurisdiction that has authority over the site.
  3. Understand the relationship between the state and local code requirements.
  4. Locate the correct code chapter pertaining to a task.
  5. Apply the code ruling pertaining to the project.
