CIVL 1030 - Materials & Testing: ACI Concrete Level 1 Cert Prep

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: None

This course will examine the properties, structure, testing, and use of construction materials including wood, aggregates, cement, steel, concrete, masonry, and asphalt.  Students will evaluate the performance characteristics of construction materials by examining physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Understanding concrete and how to test concrete in the field, students will prepare for the ACI (American Concrete Institute) Concrete Level 1 professional certification along with the MCA (Michigan Concrete Associate) Exams and have the opportunity to register to take these professional exams in the construction lab at Macomb Community College at the end of the semester.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will examine the master format numbering system for construction materials.

Objectives:

  1. List the number of divisions.
  2. Recognize how industry uses these divisions within the building profession.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will propose the use of construction materials based on the common material properties.

Objectives:

  1. List the major classifications of materials.
  2. Describe the proper use of materials.
  3. Analyze the advantages and disadvantage of a selected material.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will assess reports generated within the construction field around the use of material.   

Objectives:

  1. Examine basic testing principle.
  2. Categorize the importance of a variety of reports.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will compose testing results and how they affect the selection of construction materials.

Objectives:

  1. Examine different procedures for testing materials.
  2. Estimate which materials are valid from the field reports.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will simulate the major field tests of concrete within the ACI and MCA guidelines.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the professional testing requirements of concrete.
  2. Experiment with concrete testing techniques performed on and off the construction site.
  3. Prepare for the professional ACI Concrete Level 1 Certification exam.
