ATAM 1000 - Mathematics for the Trades I

Prerequisites: None

(formerly ATAM 1150 and ATAM 1160)

ATAM 1000 provides an intensive review of shop arithmetic and the fundamentals of algebra for all trades through the solution of practical industrial shop problems.  Major topics of study include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, signed numbers, square roots, exponents, ratios and proportions, percent, units of measurement and conversions, scientific and engineering notation, algebraic expressions, solving algebraic equations, polynomials, special products, factoring, and systems of equations.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to apply basic arithmetic operations.

Objectives:

  1. Solve practical problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of signed numbers.
  2. Solve practical problems using the correct method of calculating percentages.
  3. Solve practical problems using the correct method of establishing ratio and proportion for unknown quantities.
  4. Solve practical problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions.
  5. Solve practical problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals.
  6. Solve practical problems using exponents and square roots.
  7. Convert measurements between U.S. customary units and metric units.
  8. Solve practical problems using scientific and engineering notation.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to use basic mathematical properties.

Objectives:

  1. Use the correct order of operations to solve practical problems.
  2. Solve practical problems using the commutative property.
  3. Solve practical problems using the associative property.
  4. Solve practical problems using the distribution property.
  5. Solve practical problems using the identity property.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to apply fundamental algebraic principles.

  1. Simplify algebraic expressions.
  2. Evaluate formulas and literal expressions.
  3. Translate simple phrases and sentences into algebraic expressions and equations.
  4. Solve algebraic equations involving multiple operations.
  5. Solve industrial formulas and word problems.
  6. Solve a system of two linear equations in two variables.
  7. Solve quadratic equations.
