FOOD-8018A Bee-ginner Beekeeping 101

Prerequisites None
Bee-ginner Beekeeping is offered in 3 segments to coincide with the beekeeping year. In this first segment, students will learn about general beekeeping principles, beekeeping equipment, and the honeybees themselves.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1. Understand why bees are important to us and the environment.
  2. Be able to accurately choose the proper beekeeping equipment.
  3. Be able to accurately recognize different bee castes.
  4. Be able to identify different IPMs (Integrated Pest Management).

  1. Bees and the environment.
  2. Safety and bees.
  3. Identify different types of beekeeping equipment.
  4. Identify different types of bee castes.
  5. Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Activities/Resources
  • This is a hands-on course.

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate this course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
The instructor will evaluate the student’s skills learned using attendance, participation, feedback, testing where appropriate, and projects completed.  75% attendance is required; 100% attendance is recommended as no special arrangements will be made for missing class. 75% attendance = 6.75 hours.  Upon successful completion, this course will appear on the student’s Macomb Community College non-credit transcript.
