CRTR-8022 Court Reporting Theory 3

Prerequisites None
Writing techniques are applied while student begins process of speed building. Tests in literary, jury charge, and Q & A must be passed with 95% accuracy at speeds of 60, 80, and 100 wpm; CAT software is required.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate familiarity with the keyboard of the shorthand machine.
  2. Demonstrate level-appropriate skills in the use of the shorthand machine.
  3. Apply principles of conflict-free writing.
  4. Transcribe and pass with 95% accuracy at least one test at 60 wpm in each category of literary, jury charge, and Q & A.
  5. Transcribe and pass with 95% accuracy at least one test at 80 wpm in each category of literary, jury charge, and Q & A.
  6. Transcribe and pass with 95% accuracy at least one test at 100 wpm in each category of literary, jury charge, and Q & A.

Topics
Topics will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Effective study habits and methods.
  2. Courtroom and deposition vocabulary.
  3. Rules and concepts of real time writing.
  4. International, national, and local current events.
  5. Role of the reporter in trials, depositions, administrative hearings, and other judicial proceedings.
  6. Marking and handling of exhibits.
  7. Indexing and archiving of steno notes, paper and electronic.
  8. Reporting techniques.
  9. Transcript preparation and production.
  10. The profession of court reporting and related job opportunities.
  11. How to report and transcribe voir dire of the jury and witnesses and the polling of a jury.
  12. Proofreading skills.
  13. Ethics.
  14. Knowledge of an involvement in professional associations.
  15. The importance of continuing education.
  16. Professional image and dress.

Activities/Resources
  • ​Access to professional organizations such as NCRA and MAPCR
  • Participation in two-voice dictation classes.

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate the course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
Instructors will assess student based on class performance, completion of required assignments, verbal communication and class participation, attendance, and the success of all tests.  All speed tests must be passed with a 95% accuracy rate and are graded according to the National Court Reporting Association Minimum Standards and Requirements “What Is an Error?”  Practice logs must be submitted weekly to instructor in order to receive course credit.

Exams: 50%

Homework: 20%

Class participation and read back: 10%
