Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the steps in the preparation of a transcript using proper grammar and punctuation.
  2. Apply the standard proofreading tools when editing a transcript.
  3. Demonstrate the correct use of punctuation in transcripts including but not limited to run-on, interrupted sentences, et cetera.
  4. Demonstrate the use of proper grammar.
  5. Demonstrate the use of correct terminology and vocabulary.
  6. Build vocabulary.
  7. Apply correct spelling rules.

Topics
Topics will include but are not limited to:

  1. Parts of speech.
  2. Punctuation.
  3. Numbers.
  4. Capitalization.
  5. Abbreviations.
  6. Paragraphing.
  7. Parts of a transcript.
  8. Punctuating transcripts.
  9. Court testimony.
  10. Jury charge,
  11. Realtime writer by understanding word usage.
  12. Using proper grammar.
  13. Punctuating sentences that are not grammatically correct.
  14. Building vocabulary.
  15. Spelling exercises.
  16. Tips to facilitate realtime writing.

Evaluation
Students will confidentially evaluate the course by completing the Student Evaluation of Class form distributed at the last class session.

Successful Completion
Instructor will assess the students on class performance, completion of required assignments, class participation, group project, attendance, unit quizzes, and final exam.  There will be no more than 3 excused absences per semester.

Attendance: 5%

Assignments: 30%

Mid-term exam: 20%

Unit quizzes: 20%

Final exam: 25%

Students must achieve a minimum of 80% for successful completion.​
