ATEE 1320 - National Electric Code for the Commercial Environment

Credit Hours: 2.00


Prerequisites: ATEE 1310  

This course builds on ATEE -1310 and reviews the unique code variations related to commercial buildings and environments according to the National Electric Code. Circuit design, electrical components, and installation practices within the guidelines of the National Electric Code will be discussed, including the review of building prints and specifically JIC symbols that are commonly used.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Recognize electrical symbols and notations used in commercial electrical diagrams. 

Objectives:  

  1. Articulate the lines and symbols that refer to electrical installation. 

  1. Articulate the descriptions and notations that refer to electrical installation. 

  1. Articulate the schematic wiring diagrams that refer to electrical power distribution. 

 

Outcome 2: Determine the proper conductor size for commercial wiring installation in accordance of the National Electric Code (NEC). 

Objectives:  

  1. Calculate branch circuit sizing and loading. 

  1. Estimate the load for the outlet of a circuit. 

  1. Calculate the demand factors for various machines and electrical equipment. 

  1. Articulate proper method of making splices. 

 

Outcome 3: Determine what lighting systems to use at each area in the commercial building. 

Objectives:  

  1. Select correct lighting system based off application. 

  1. Identify the different types of lamps. 

  1. Describe the different installation techniques used for lighting installation. 

 

Outcome 4: Students will be able to demonstrate how to properly wire connections according to the National Electric Code. 

Objectives: 

  1. Identify the correct wiring connections for various switches. 

  1. Identify grounded and ungrounded conductors. 

  1. Describe how a wall box can be grounded. 

  1. Identify the proper switch for a specific installation. 

  1. Identify when GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) and AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) protection is required.
