BLAW 2100 - International Business Law

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: BLAW 1080  

This fundamentals course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of international law for conducting business with foreign nationals within the United States or abroad.  Topics will cover the legal environment of international business; international sales, credits, and commercial transactions; international and U.S. trade law; and regulations of the international marketplace.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the legal environment of international business.

Objectives:

  1. Identify what is international law.
  2. Define international law.
  3. Identify sources of international law, including custom, treaties, and international conventions.
  4. Identify different legal systems (such as common law, civil law, and Islamic law system).
  5. Compare different legal systems.
  6. Identity various ways to resolve disputes arising from international business transactions.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply commercial transactions to international sales.

Objectives:

  1. Identify Convention on Contracts for the International Sales of Goods (CISG).
  2. Define CISG.
  3. Identify various documents of title or other negotiable transport documents in facilitating exchange of goods and money across international borders.
  4. Identify trade terms in sales contracts.
  5. Identify legal issues in international transportation (such as aviation and maritime law).
  6. Identify negotiable instruments used in international trade (such as letter of credit).
  7. Apply CISG to a case scenario.
  8. Explain international sales and commercial transactions.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain trade law practices.

Objectives:

  1. Identify branches of U.S. government and role each plays in regulating foreign commerce and trade.
  2. Identify the role of the World Trade Organization.
  3. Identify regulations for importing and exporting.
  4. Identify the United States - Mexico - Canada Agreement (USMCA).
  5. Identify the European Union.
  6. Summarize international law.
  7. Summarize U.S. trade law.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the regulation of the international marketplace.

Objectives:

  1. Identify laws relating to marketing and advertising.
  2. Define U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
  3. Identify labor laws.
  4. Identify environmental laws.
  5. Compare international marketplace regulations.
