ARTT 2222 - Professional Practices in Fine Art

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: ARTT 1060 , ARTT 1070 , ARTT 1360 , and ARTT 1380 

Students will learn the business side of an art career, such as how to document work, prepare a portfolio, write an artist statement, apply for an exhibition, set up an exhibition, and market artwork.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to document artwork.

Objectives:  

  1. Prepare artwork for documentation.
  2. Prepare a portfolio.  
  3. Produce a professional portfolio. 

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to write an artist statement. 

Objectives:

  1. Distinguish between a well written artist statement and a poorly written artist statement.
  2. Write an artist statement.  
    1. Write an artist statement for an individual artwork.
    2. Write an artist statement for a body of work.

 

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to market artwork. 

Objectives:

  1. Distinguish between good marketing techniques and poor marketing techniques in art.
    1. Evaluate professional artists websites.
  2. Create an artist marketing website or Social Media page.

 

Outcome 4. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to price artwork.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the value of artwork on a global level.
  2. Understand the local art market.
  3. Assign financial value to artwork.

 

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to apply for an art exhibition. 

Objectives:

  1. Understand the differences among art exhibitions.
  2. Write a proposal for a group exhibition.
  3. Write a proposal for a solo exhibition.
  4. Enter a juried exhibition.
  5. Understand the dynamics of an invitational exhibition.

 

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to write a cover letter.

Objectives:

  1. Write a cover letter for a group exhibition.
  2. Write a cover letter for a solo exhibition.
  3. Write a cover letter for academic admission.

 

Outcome 7: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to hang a gallery exhibition. 

Objectives:

  1. Visit several local galleries to see how exhibitions are hung.
  2. Visit the Detroit Institute of Arts to see how it hangs exhibitions.
  3. Hang the annual MCC Art Student exhibition.
  4. Produce professional labels for exhibition.

 

Outcome 8: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to properly package a work to be shipped safely.

Objectives:

  1. Prepare 2D work for shipping.
  2. Prepare 3D work for shipping.
  3. Prepare an oversized painting for shipping.
  4. Prepare an oversized sculpture for shipping.
