HITT 1209 - International Classification of Disease (ICD)-Beginning Coding Credit Hours: 3.00 Prerequisites: Admission into the Health Information Technology Program; HITT 1102 , HITT 1105, and HITT 1106 all with grade C or better
Corequisites: HITT 1201 , HITT 1210 , and HITT 1211
(formerly HITT 1209 and HITT 2108)
HITT 1209 introduces students to the International Classification of Disease (ICD) as used in diagnostic and procedural coding. Laboratory session focuses on the application of the related skills with accuracy and completeness using manual and computerized methods.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify health data structure, content, and standards.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to abstract and maintain data for clinical indices/databases/registries.
- Use and maintain applications and processes to support other clinical classification and nomenclature systems.
Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to interpret guidelines of clinical classification systems.
Objectives:
- Define and discuss coding applications in various health care settings.
- Demonstrate ethical application of diagnosis/procedure codes using ICD-10-CM/PCS
- Adhere to current regulations and established guidelines in code assignment.
- Apply policies and procedures for the use of clinical data required in reimbursement and prospective payment systems (PPS) in healthcare delivery.
- Validate coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record.
- Resolve discrepancies between coded data and supporting documentation.
Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to utilize information and communication technologies.
Objectives:
- Use and maintain electronic applications and work processes to support clinical classification and coding.
- Use specialized software in the completion of HIM processes such as record tracking, release of information, coding, grouping, registries, billing, quality improvement, and imaging.
