CIVL 1020 - OSHA Construction Safety

Study of construction safety with a focus on OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards. This is OSHA-authorized safety training for completion of the OSHA30 hour certification earned at the end of the course. Students will learn about health and safety awareness by helping supervisors and workers reduce the risk of workplace hazards. Course topics include governing bodies, focus four hazards, safety standards, and the responsibilities of the employees and the employers.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to outline different safety terms used by various governing bodies.

Objectives:

Define the purpose of various organizations, including OSHA, MIOSHA, and MDEQ.
Compare safety standards of various organizations, including OSHA, MIOSHA, and MDEQ.
Use appropriate key words and phrases related to safety standards.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to manage workplace safety and health

Objectives:

Communicate workplace safety and health standards.
Monitor workplace safety and health standards.
Investigate injury, illness, and accident prevention programs.
Define successful job site inspections.
Complete safety communications.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to breakdown different types of safety standard procedures.

Objectives:

Describe safety procedures.
Define traffic control.
Describe equipment-testing procedures.
Recommend safety procedures.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the responsibilities of employees and employers concerning safety

Objectives:

Define lock out, tag out procedures.
Describe excavation procedures.
Compare employee and employer responsibilities.
Calculate insurance rates based on EMR.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to support the ethics of safety.

Objectives:

Define the right to know.
Contact outside inspectors.
Determine where certifications are obtained.
Contact appropriate people in case of an emergency.
Explain the consequences for disregarding procedures.

Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to develop a company safety management program based on standard safety areas.

Objectives:

Define electrical safety.
Define stairways and ladder safety.
Define excavations with different trenches and shoring.
Define fall protection.
Define personal protection equipment safety.
Define confined space entry.
Define chemical awareness safety.
Define HazCom: Identifying the dangers.
