CIVL 1050 - Construction Safety Policy & Procedures

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: None

Introductory study of construction safety and the ethics of safety. Students will learn about the governing bodies, safety standards, and the responsibilities of the employees and the employers.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to identify the different safety governing bodies.

Objectives:

  1. Define OSHA.
  2. Define MOSHA.
  3. Define MDEQ.
  4. Understand operation of governing bodies.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the different types of safety standard procedures.

Objectives:

  1. Describe safety procedures.
  2. Define traffic control.
  3. Describe equipment-testing procedures.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to describe the responsibilities of employees and employers concerning safety.

Objectives:

  1. Define lock out, tag out procedures.
  2. Understand excavation procedures.
  3. Define employee’s responsibilities.
  4. Define employer’s responsibilities.
  5. Calculate insurance rates based on EMR.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to describe the ethics of safety.

Objectives:

  1. Define the right to know.
  2. Contact outside inspectors.
  3. Find where certifications can be obtained.
  4. Contact appropriate people in case of an emergency.
  5. Understand the consequences for disregarding procedures.

Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to develop a company safety management program based on standard safety areas.

Objectives:

  1. Define electrical safety.
  2. Define ladder safety.
  3. Define trenches and shoring.
  4. Define fall protection.
  5. Define personal protection equipment safety.
  6. Define confined space entry.
  7. Define chemical awareness safety.
  8. Define HazCom: Identifying the dangers.
