AUTO 1210 - Automotive Engines Fundamentals

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: AUTO 1000

This course will include theory of operation, engine testing, cooling systems and lubrication systems.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the operation of a four stroke engine

Objectives:

  1. Describe the function of the valves during the four stroke cycle.
  2. Describe the when the low and high pressure occurs in the combustion chamber.
  3. Explain the importance of correct timing between the crankshaft and camshaft.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the method for determining displacement and compression

Objectives:

  1. Identify the criteria necessary for determining displacement.
  2. Identify the formula for finding the compression ratio.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to properly perform engine diagnostic test.

Objectives:

  1. Perform a compression test.
  2. Explain the purpose of an engine run up test.
  3. Demonstrate how to perform a cylinder leakage test.
