PHIL 2912 - Philosophy of Art


This course examines a number of different perspectives and issues in the philosophy of art. It surveys diverse theories about the nature, the origin, and the function of art. Special attention is given to notion of the aesthetic experience and how it is understood, including the roles of reason, emotion, and the imagination. The issues explored include topics such as art as a reflection of life, culture and beliefs, art and technology, art. To underscore the role of art in a multicultural world, we read contemporary writings in this area and examine three cultures through myth, fairy tale, short story, film, and music. (3 contact hrs)
