LAW 148 - Legal Issues in Corrections This course will provide a general overview of the federal constitutional law, federal and state statutes and state administrative law and their impact upon the rights of prisoners and the duties of correctional officers will be undertaken; special emphasis will be placed on the 1st, 5th, 8th and 14th amendments and 42 USC 1983. Leading court decisions in these areas will be studied. The course will also review the evolution of correctional law; the impact of civil lawsuits on correctional officers and the system as a whole and the liabilities of correctional officers for negligence and misconduct. This is one of five courses certified by the Michigan Correctional Officers Training Council and successful completion is a partial fulfillment of requirements for a Vocational Certificate granted by the Michigan Corrections Commission.
