This course is designed to introduce students to the Spanish speaking world and Spanish vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary to express personal meaning on basic topics. Students will engage in these activities within contextualized cultural settings. The vocabulary and grammatical structures are integrated into interactive and communicative activities that emphasize all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students are required to use computer based technology to practice these skills.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate competency in basic oral language skills.Objectives: - Pronounce individual sounds, including appropriate intonation and stress, with little or no interference in order to be understood by a Native Speaker.
- Form and produce entire sentences with no hesitation and natural pauses.
- Engage in small conversations with a Native Speaker in the present and future tense about the following topics (includes both initiating conversations as well as responding appropriately to speech of a Native Speaker):
- Getting acquainted.
- Give and receive information about time, schedule, work, school, weather.
- Make phone calls.
- Express ownership and relationships.
- Describe people and feelings.
- Handle social situations such as sports events.
- Plan a vacation.
Outcome 2:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to use basic Spanish vocabulary. Objectives:
Regarding topics such as school, work, free time, vacation, transportation, city places, family, social interactions, professions, and weather expressions: - Use vocabulary when speaking.
- Respond to a Native Speaker who has used the vocabulary.
- Use vocabulary in writing.
- Demonstrate reading comprehension skills by discussing subject matter and/or answering questions based on the passage read.
Outcome 3:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to use basic grammar structures in speaking and writing. Objectives: - Conjugate regular, irregular, and stem changing present tense verbs.
- Use ordinal and cardinal numbers.
- Use present progressive verb forms.
- Use ser vs. estar, as appropriate.
- Use nouns and articles.
- Use descriptive and possessive adjectives and article agreements.
- Formulate questions and answers.
- Use saber vs. conocer, as appropriate.
Outcome 4:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to recognize and discuss aspects of Spanish culture. Objectives: - Recognize and discuss some basic geographical, economical and cultural aspects of some Spanish speaking countries and/or communities such education, sports, and leisure activities, dances and music, food, and family relationship and professions.
