WHES 2024 - Community & Environmental Health

Credit Hours: 3.00


Prerequisites: None

This is an introductory course that will provide students the knowledge and skills needed for a career in health education, health promotion and environmental health. It will focus on community health, community organizations, program planning, epidemiology and environmental health.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to outline the history of community and public health, including factors that impacted health throughout the years and ways to prevent future occurrences.

Objectives:
1. Define the terms health, community, community health, population health, public health, public health system and global health.
2. List the factors that affect the health of a community.
3. Identify major events of community and public health throughout the centuries.
4. Describe the purpose of Healthy People 2020 goals and objectives.
5. Explain the three levels of application of preventive measures in disease control.
6. Define an incidence, attack and prevalence rate.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe community and public health programs/services and the organizations that help shape them. 

Objectives:
1. Describe the structure and function of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
2. State the three core functions of public health.
3. List the 10 essential public health services.
4. Discuss the impacts that corporations, service, social and religious organizations have on community and public health.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the process of creating a program and the
structure and function of the health care system. 

Objectives:
1. List the steps in the program planning process.
2. Identify an example of delivery settings within the spectrum of health care delivery.
3. Describe the purpose of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
4. Explain the four domains of practice in health care.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify hazards within the environment, ways to prevent injuries and diseases and ways to protect our natural resources.

Objectives:
1. Describe the different indoor air pollutants and the affects it has on the human body.
2. Identify some of the agents that cause foodborne outbreaks.
3. Describe how agencies help protect the safety of food.
4. List strategies for the prevention and control of unintentional injuries.
5. Identify the different types of pollutants that threaten our water supply.
