SPCH 1010 - Introduction to Communication Credit Hours: 3.00 Prerequisites: None
An introduction to the discipline of communication. Emphasis is on basic theories of communication and the contexts in which communication occurs. The course surveys multiple areas of communication: general principles, interpersonal, small groups, intercultural, organizational, conflict, presentation speaking, and mass media.
Contact Hours: 3 Billable Contact Hours: 3 OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will explain the significance of communication to the human experience.
Objectives:
- The student will explain intrapersonal communication.
- The student will practice communication ethics.
- The student will solve communication problems using critical thinking.
- The student will explain using a communication model how communication and miscommunication can occur.
Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will employ basic interpersonal communication theory.
Objectives:
- The student will demonstrate verbal communication (language and meaning).
- The student will classify nonverbal communication.
- The student will listen and paraphrase messages.
Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply a skill base teaching them to be a competent member of a problem solving group.

- The student will demonstrate knowledge and usage of tools and skill resources for group production.
- The student will apply leadership theory.
- The student will use interaction skills in a group setting.
Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to prepare an analysis of communication and culture.

- The student will discuss language and intercultural communication.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will analyze professional communication theory.
Objectives:
- The student will name and explain the theoretical concepts central to organizational communication.
- The student will recognize the professional communication behaviors that reflect these concepts.
- The student will be able to identify and distinguish how conflict occurs and the role communication plays in its development, management, and resolution.
- The student will be able to prepare a topic with a central idea for an analyzed audience.
- The student will discuss the importance of public relations.
Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe the use of mass media in society.
Objectives:
- The student will be able to use theory to explain the evolution of mass media.
- The student will relate the use of radio, television, internet, including the use of social media in society.
- The student will explain the place of journalism, ethics, and content in mass media.
