WHES 2022 - Lifestyle, Behavior & Disease

This course focuses on lifestyle and behavior and their relationship to disease risk and prevention. Topics include wellness, mental health, communication, relationships, stress, drug and alcohol use, sexuality and sexually transmitted disease, chronic disease, nutrition, physical activity, and weight management. Students will create a personal lifestyle and behavior plan to decrease their risk of disease.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the wellness philosophy.

Objectives:

  1. Define wellness and distinguish among its dimensions.
  2. Describe the relationship between the dimensions of wellness.
  3. List and define the stages of change.
  4. Define self-efficacy and its relationship to barriers of change

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain the role of lifestyle and behavior in disease.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the leading health problems in the United States and their causes.
  2. Explain the difference between correlation and causation and their relationship to disease
  3. Describe the role of lifestyle and behavior in the management and prevention of disease
  4. Describe the role of culture in the United States and other countries and its disease implications.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply the dimensions of wellness in the management and prevention of disease.

Objectives:

  1. Evaluate current lifestyle, behaviors and risk factors for disease.
  2. Create a program to reduce personal risk factors for disease.

COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE
This course outline is reflects the topics that are covered in this course. It is also offered as a virtual course. All instructors will utilize the Master Shell created by the lead instructor which will ensure all content in this outline is up to date and being covered within each course.
The outline of topics below will be taught using a variety of methods including but not limited to lecture, videos, websites, class discussions, specific assignments that relate to the topic, nutrition analysis using specific nutrition programs, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (on-ground only), quizzes, exams, and self-reflection assessments.
