ATWD 2420 - Tool & Die Welding

Credit Hours: 3.00

Prerequisites: ATWD 1150 or related work experience

The student shall study tool and die steels, their heat treatment, tempering and chemical analysis with emphasis on filler metal selection and welding procedures used in repair and fabrication with tool and die steels. The student shall weld samples with tool and die electrodes using different welding processes.

Location: South Campus

Contact Hours: 4
Billable Contact Hours: 4
OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify and weld tool and die steels.

Objectives:

  1. Identify tool steels.
  2. Weld several examples of fabrication or repair of tools or dies along with the welding procedure used.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify heat treatment, tempering, and chemical analysis with emphasis on filler metal selection.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the chemical analysis, heat treatment and tempering of these steels.
  2. Select the process and filler metal to weld the tool steels.
  3. Prepare the welding procedure for the weld considering joint design, pre-heat, post-heat, peening, and cleaning.
