LAWE 1300 - Police Field Study


Credit Hours: 3.00
(3 contact hrs)
This course is designed to give the advanced student an opportunity to observe field practices of law enforcement agencies. Students will spend time in a law enforcement agency such as a police department, sheriff’s department, or court to observe actual job related tasks. In addition, the student will have classroom lectures regarding specific law enforcement responsibilities. Center Campus.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
OUTCOME 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify and evaluate techniques and systems currently used in law enforcement.

OBJECTIVES: The student will:

  1. Demonstrate awareness of current practices by direct examination of officers at work.
  2. Identify issues facing officers and departments by creating a journal of observations.
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking by assessing how officers deal with the situations they encounter.
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking by identifying administrative policy and how that policy controls police behavior.
  5. Identify the effect of supervisory control over officers in field situations.

OUTCOME 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify differences and similarities in writing about police activities and observations made while in the field.

OBJECTIVES: The student will:

  1. The effect of community responsiveness on the operation of a department.
  2. Discretion as used by practitioners.
  3. Methodology in deployment of personnel.
  4. Use of equipment and technology.
  5. The effect of civil liability on day-to-day operations.
