HUMN 1472 - Selected Studies in Film: the Western


Credit Hours: 3.00
(3 contact hrs)
A course to permit the student further development of specialized interest in film. This will be done through background readings, screening, and analytical writing concerning major motion pictures. Such topics as film history, the documentary, film production, or the study of a major film artist will be offered.

Prerequisites:
None

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify pre‐ and post‐Civil War westward expansion.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the historical record of the expansion of the American west.
  2. Discuss Hollywood’s portrayal of the post‐Civil War social and political situations that propelled westward expansion.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to document the end (death) of the portrayal of the western experience in film.

Objectives:

  1. Identify major films and filmmakers of the genre.
  2. Discuss the portrayal of American westward expansion by Hollywood.
  3. Discuss the evolution of western film characters, plots, etc.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to distinguish between the historical reality of American westward expansion and its presentation in film.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the history of the expansion of the American west.
  2. Discuss the myth of the expansion of the American west created by Hollywood.
  3. Differentiate between the subjective content of the narrative film and the objective nature of the documentary.
  4. Compare/contrast history vs. Hollywood.
