FIRE 2300 - Fire Department Administration Credit Hours: 3.00 (3 contact hrs) Organization, supervision, and effective management of modern fire departments; survey of municipal fire problems; fire defenses and insurance rates; legal aspects of fire prevention; records and measurement of results. OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of current national trends and developments related to fire service organization, financing, and labor relations.
Objectives: The student will:
- Identify U.S. fire loss trends.
- Identify fire incidents by major property class.
- Identify the ten deadliest U.S. fires and explosions in history.
- Identify the leading causes of fire.
- Define passive fire protection.
- Identify the options available for fire confinement.
- Identify building design principles for occupant evacuation.
Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to given a prescribe quantity of personnel and equipment for a given area to be protected, shall develop a model plan for the utilization of those resources.
Objectives: The student will:
- Given a summary of apparatus and equipment, demonstrate knowledge of national apparatus standards and specifications.
- Identify a system used to develop specific and accurate specifications for apparatus and major items of equipment based on local needs and conditions.
- Given a table of organization, identify the system used for the assignment and utilization of personnel.
Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will, given a topic, demonstrate the ability of public speaking by preparing a written speech, developing the appropriate visual aids, and delivering a speech.
Objectives: The student will:
- Demonstrate the ability to develop a teaching outline.
- Demonstrate the ability to prepare audiovisual aids.
- Demonstrate the ability of public speaking.
- Describe how to prepare and submit a news release.
- Given a summary of various types of complaints, describe the proper steps used in handling the complaints.
Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to determine the funds necessary to operate a unit of the fire department for a fiscal period, prepare a budget as prescribed by the departmental policy, and prepare the necessary justification.
Objectives: The student will:
- Given the pertinent information, shall:
- Establish goals for a total fire protection program.
- Determine the budget requirements for implementation of the program.
- Justify the budget request.
- Demonstrate knowledge of how to develop and administer a system of budget control based on fiscal and financial policies.
Outcome 5: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to manage a project by using a project management system.
Objectives: The student will:
- Demonstrate the ability to plan a project.
- Identify the project objectives.
- Demonstrate the ability to develop the project schedule.
- Demonstrate the project budget.
- Define the project management control and evaluation.
Outcome 6: Upon completion of this course, students will, given a personnel situation, identify the types of corrective supervisory actions required and describe how each is used as a tool of supervision.

- Identify and define three types of commonly used personnel interviews.
- Identify and define two types of approaches to counseling.
