ECHS 1710 - Child Care Management


Credit Hours: 3.00
(3 contact hrs)
(formerly ECHS-1700) This course is designed to help students develop the necessary knowledge and skills to manage child care centers. Through the use of a theoretical model the student will demonstrate the ability to maintain a healthy and safe environment, assure developmentally appropriate curriculum, manage a budget including supplies and equipment, schedule and work with staff and with working parents, meet licensing regulations, and demonstrate an awareness of NAEYC accreditation criteria and procedures.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: On completion of ECHS-1710, given philosophies from other infant, toddler, preschool, and school-age programs, the student will be able to develop a philosophy of care for a center, applying knowledge of growth and development of each age group.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will write a center philosophy.
  2. Students will identify goals contained in a philosophy.
  3. Students will design activities to meet goals contained in the philosophy.

Outcome 2: On completion of ECHS-1710, the student will be able to describe typical childcare budget and marketing practices.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will review financial documents.
  2. Students will identify ways to improve a center’s financial position.
  3. Students will create a marketing plan.
  4. Students will create a marketing flyer.

Outcome 3: On completion of ECHS-1710, the student will be able to describe the State of Michigan childcare licensing regulations and be able to implement these regulations to organize children into groups, develop a schedule for children and staff, plan menus and snacks.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will use licensing regulations to plan appropriate practices and routines in a child care center.
  2. Students will create a weekly menu.

Outcome 4: On completion of ECHS-1710, the student will be able to develop plans for interviewing perspective staff and for improving and maintaining quality of staff performance.

Objectives:

  1. Students will review resumes and choose appropriate candidates to interview.
  2. Students will design questions to be used during the interview.
  3. Students will create a job posting.
  4. Students will create a staff training presentation.
  5. Students will interview a director.

Outcome 5: On completion of ECHS-1710, the student will be able to plan for informal and formal communication for management and staff and for management and parents.

Objectives:

  1. Students will develop a plan for communicating with parents and staff.
  2. Students will use the parent information from the National Association for the Education of Young Children to plan appropriate practices.
  3. Students will plan a family event.

Outcome 6: On completion of ECHS-1710, the student will be able to develop plans for safety, health, first aid, and disaster policies for a child care center.

Objectives:

  1. Students will state appropriate procedures for fire, tornado and emergency incidents.
  2. Students will identify licensing requirements for maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.

Outcome 7: On completion of ECHS-1710, the student will be able to describe the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s accreditation standards and process of evaluation and accreditation for a child care center.

Objectives:

  1. Students will use the standards to plan effective routines and practices.
  2. Students will use standards to evaluate practices.
