ARTT 2170 - Oil Painting - Painting 2

Classical handling of the medium with some research into contemporary methods and material. Center Campus.

Prerequisite: ARTT-2160

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to produce a sustained painting on stretched canvas from preliminary studies.

Objectives:

Learn about different types of supports (e.g. canvas, panels)
Treat different types of supports with a variety of preparational priming methods
Produce a final product that incorporates these strategies

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate an ability to paint color harmonies with compositional schemes and convert drawings into paintings.

Objectives:

Transcribe preliminary painting studies into a final sustained painting
Apply competently specific palettes (e.g. flesh use of compliments for tonal applications, shadow, etc.) in the students’ final products

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain ideas and criteria in various works of art.

Objectives:

Define ideas and criteria within historical references
Develop ideas in their creative abilities that parallel those within an historical reference.

COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE

Intro of materials and course outline.
2 weeks in preparation of panels and stretched canvasses.
3 - 4 week on intro assignments rotations (one from observation/one from photo source.
3 - 4 week planning a composition for sustainment using preliminary studies.
2 - 3 weeks converting a drawing to a painting.
2 - 3 weeks practicing with figurative apalettes.
2 - 3 weeks in reading and experimenting in paint from an artist of choice.
