MSTC 2100 - Metal Casting Technology

(Formerly MST 210) Principles of materials science and engineering unique to casting production. Includes considerations for: casting and pattern design, mold production, metal melting and metal handling. Skills developed in the operation of sand control test equipment; a gas-fired crucible furnace for melting non-ferrous alloys; and a coreless, induction furnace for melting ferrous alloys. Coordinated work in hot metal laboratory emphasizing the structure, quality, and properties of cast metal to heat transfer criteria, fluid flow principles, alloying, and inoculation theories and physical metallurgical phase equilibria. (4 contact hrs) South Campus.
