WHES 1665 - Tennis

(formerly PHED-1665) This course is designed to teach the student tennis skills including ground strokes (forward and backhand), volleying (forehand and backhand), overhead smash, lob shots, approach shots, drop shots and serving. Students will learn basic strategies for singles and doubles match play, scoring, rules and etiquette of the game. South campus.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate tennis strokes using the proper tennis grips.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the continental grip when executing the slice shot, volley, the smash, the lob and the drop shot.
  2. Demonstrate the backhand drive grip and two handed backhand grip when executing the backhand ground stroke.
  3. Demonstrate the forehand drive grip when executing the forehand ground stroke d. Demonstrate the continental and/or eastern grip for serving while executing serves.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate accurate position for strokes.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the ready position.
  2. Perform footwork for transition from the forehand stroke to the backhand stroke.
  3. Perform footwork for transition from the backhand stroke to the forehand stroke.
  4. Perform footwork from baseline position to approach and net positions.
  5. Execute footwork preparation for overhead, lob and volley shots.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to emulate offensive and defensive strategies for singles and doubles match play.

Objectives:

  1. Display offensive and defensive court positioning for singles play.
  2. Display offensive and defensive court positioning for doubles play.

Outcome 4: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to summarize fundamental tennis concepts (e.g. tennis rules, vocabulary, scoring, etiquette, court position and strategies for singles and doubles match play.)

Objectives:

  1. Identify rules, scoring, vocabulary and game etiquette on written exam.
  2. Identify strategies and court position on written exam.
  3. Exhibit proper etiquette on the court at all times during match play.
  4. Follow rules during match play.
  5. Call out the score of the game correctly during match play for both singles and doubles. f. Exhibit proper court positon and strategy positioning during match play for both singles and doubles.
