SURV 2700 - Advanced Survey Instrumentation

(5 contact hrs)
(formerly SUR 270) This course instructs the student in the proper care, adjustments and maintenance of various survey equipment. Students will perform testing and adjustments on levels, transits, and EDMs. South Campus.

Pre & Co Requisite(s): Prerequisite: SURV-1110
OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course students will demonstrate knowledge of how to identify and remedy instrument error.

Objectives

  1. Perform total station error identification.
  2. Perform Tribrach adjustment.
  3. Perform peg test with level.
  4. Perform cleaning and maintenance of surveying instruments.
  5. Perform pointing and reading test on an instrument.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course students will demonstrate cleaning and maintenance of surveying instruments.

Objectives

  1. Identify methods to clean and maintain a non-electronic transit and level.
  2. Identify methods to clean and maintain an electronic digital level.
  3. Identify methods to clean and maintain a total station with the controller.

  6. Columnation adjustment.
  7. EDM range evaluation for distance.
  8. TEST-Magnification of scope.
  9. Review
  10. MID-TERM EXAM
  11. Top mounted EDMs - adjustments/errors
  12. Laser levels - adjustments to rotating beam
  13. Checking procedures and light maintenance
  14. Overview of which equipment is necessary for first order, second order, third order surveys, etc.
  15. Review.
  16. FINAL EXAM
