HUMN 2912 - Introduction to Translation & Interpreting

This course provides an overview to the profession of translation and interpreting. Students will gain an understanding of theoretical concepts, communication quality, fidelity, issues in specialized discourse, models, knowledge acquisition, online interpretation, and conference interpreting. The course also focuses on the knowledge, skills, behavior, and commitment to professional development in the field of language translation and interpreting in various settings. This course is taught in English.

OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Outcome 1: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze the role of translator and interpreter based on the growth and changes within the profession.

Objective: 

  1. Outline practical issues involved in working as translator or interpreter.
  2. Summarize the evolution of the profession.

Outcome 2: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to explain issues involved with translation and interpreting.

Objective:

  1. Define and explain the principles, recurrent issues, and difficulties of translation and interpreting.
  2. Debate fundamental communication issues.
  3. List strategies and tactics and underlying norms.
  4. Compare and contrast the links between practices and concepts.

Outcome 3: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply research in learning more about translating and interpreting.

  1. Search literature on translation and interpreting theories.
  2. Use research to write and to talk about the field of translation and interpreting.
